Joni Mitchell Releases Third Volume In Her Archives Series Spanning The Years 1972 – 1975

by Michael Levine

Joni Mitchell is one of the most revered singer-songwriters of all time. In 2020 Mitchell started releasing recordings from her vault with the first volume of archives from 1963 – 67, the second volume spanning the years 1968 – 71 followed in 2021. Which brings us to the next installment covering the years 1972 – 1975.

Starting with the release of Joni’s iconic fourth album, Blue, in 1971, Mitchell went on to release four more albums, each one more sophisticated than its predecessor. With these five consecutive releases Mitchell continuously pushed the envelope of established popular musical boundaries by adding elements of Rock, Jazz, Electronic, and World Beat influences into her work.

These three Mitchell classics included here, 1972’s For The Roses, 1974’s Court and Spark, and from 1975 The Hissing of Summer Lawns, are some of Mitchell’s most heralded work. These are the albums that contributed to her being held in the highest regard by both fans and other musicians (who were heavily influenced as well). This stellar compilation features alternative versions, previously unreleased outtakes from each album and live recordings from the various concerts that Mitchell performed from each supporting tour.

Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 3 is beautifully packaged with a companion booklet that includes photos and lyrics, all with Mitchell’s input, of course. Mitchell is also well known for being a painter and visual artist who designed all her own album covers that feature her art in various mediums. The Volume III box set is a must for any Mitchell fan and also for others just discovering this incredibly gifted and fascinating Renaissance artist.
