J.K. Rowling Selfishly Breaks Our Hearts

by Andrea Stopa

I wouldn’t call it “regret” exactly but in a recent interview J.K. Rowling admits to selfish motives regarding the beloved romance between 2/3rds of our favorite trio.

From the hybable article on the matter:

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

Betrayal hurts.

The ineffable Emma Watson served as guest editor for the new issue of Wonderland, and got Rowling to drop the bomb.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she continued, “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

Your hope means nothing!

Probably the worst part, Watson wasn’t surprised, saying she and fans have wondered whether Ron would have really satisfied Hermione. Rowling agreed the couple would need “relationship counseling.”

Well, there goes escapism.

An interesting admittance, it leaves readers and fans curious about the infinite number of possible partners for Hermione. Even more heart-breaking than the shattered perfect-ending of our favorite characters ending up as one big family, is that Hermione might have…settled.*shudder* Possibly one of the most feminist characters of a YA series otherwise central to boys, that hits us where it hurts, and begs more questions about the complicated realities of choosing a mate, especially as a self-respecting smart girl.

I suppose we can just let love be love, and live with knowing that Hermione and Ron will be seeking counseling for Hermione’s terribly stereotypical emotional dissatisfaction with her husband Ron.
