It’s Raining Little Golden Naked Men! (Oscar 2011 Nominees!)

by Emma Claire Goodman

It’s officially time to get excited for the Oscars!

With the list of 2011 Nominations announced yesterday, many of the incredibly talented individuals on the list are expressing their gratitude, excitement, and renewed/and/or/reaffirmed faith in their career path.

Of course there are the nominees we all called, such as Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman, both for Best Leading Actress in Black Swan and Rabbit Hole, respectively, but we were otherwise disappointed by a noticeable lack of female presence in most general, non-gender specific categories. There are no women up for Best Director, one female writer from Original Screenplay (which was a collaborative effort between Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg on The Kids are All Right), and among the long list of Producer names attached to the Best Picture nominees, only a handful are female. Dido, for her lyrics with brother Rollo, is one of two female nominees in Best Original Song for If I Rise from 127 Hours.  Similarly, Cinematography is male-dominated, as are the names behind the nominees for Animated Feature Film.

Still, though, there are some very delightful surprises for lady and gentleman nominees, such as Hailee Steinfeld for Actress in a Supporting Role for True Grit, and this intern certainly wouldn’t mind if the hardworking, and certainly imaginative guys responsible for the Visual Effects from Inception or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 brought home the little golden naked man.

It’s also particularly great that well known actresses, such as the aforementioned Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine, are nominated for roles in more “indie” productions, proving that a compelling film can still be a simple film with something intrinsically human at it’s core.

And we mustn’t forget The King’s Speech, a more recent release that has almost unanimously captured the hearts and lifted the spirits of many a movie go-er or anglophile.

Another announcement to look forward to? Animated Feature Film! Toy Story 3 (which is also up for Best Picture) may very well give Pixar yet another well-earned win for once again using their evil powers to make everyone in the audience burst into tears, but Woody and Buzz may have some tough competition in the animated visage of Jacques Tati from The Illusionist.

All in all, 2010 was definitely a great year for cinema, and I look forward to staring at the TV on the edge of my seat.
