Biden And It’s On Us Release Powerful Video About Rape Culture

by BUST Magazine

“The correct word for sex without consent is rape. Period.”

Last week, Joe Biden tweeted this should-be-obvious-but-for-some-reason-it’s-not statement, along with a new PSA video, “Autocorrect,” from the It’s On Us campaign he helped launch in 2014.

“Autocorrect” cleverly uses iPhone’s built-in spellcheck to demonstrate society’s continued normalization of sexual assault.

The video lays out a conversation between two dudes, one who is describing an attempt at sexually assaulting the “drunk chick” he met at a party. His text stating, “I had to encourage her a bit,” is autocorrected to a more realistic, “I had to force her a bit.”

Toward the end of the conversation, the same dude explains how the victim’s friend came to rescue her, to which dude #2 responds, “Wow, what a bitch.” The word “bitch” is then rightfully autocorrected to “hero.”

Biden and his It’s On Us campaign have been working diligently to bring awareness to the importance of bystander intervention. The entire video is powerful, but the final words are the most important:

“Don’t ignore the subtext. It’s on us to intervene in sexual assault.”
