Move over, Olsens! Peace out, Paris! Want a real fashion role maiden? Meet Iris Apfel, queen bee of quirky, cool, original fashion. Back in the 1940s, when skirts and sweater sets were the mode, Apfel hit the streets in men’s denim jeans. Men’s denim jeans, hoop earrings, and, ah yes, a turban. And so, an icon was born.
Since her youth, Apfel’s combination of glamor and flamboyance have influenced the fashion world in a big way. Now, Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel , an exhibit hosted by the Peabody Essex museum, will honor this truly fierce female. From October 17, 2009 to February 7, 2009, over 80 examples of Apfel’s iconic outfits will be on display, and Iris, the legend, herself, will appear at events throughout the exhibition.
