Inspiring Quote For the Day, Courtesy of Mindy Kaling

by Lilly O'Donnell

Former BUST cover girl, Mindy Kaling (October/November 2011), is working hard on her upcoming sitcom, The Mindy Project. Of course she’s busy, ‘cause the superwoman created the show, writes, produces and stars in it. The Office writer and actor spoke with New York Magazine about the new show, what it’s like to be in charge, and missing her mom. Pretty much everything Kaling says or does is awesome, but one thing she said in the interview really stuck out as evidence of why we’re glad she’s part of the new comedy landscape.

I never want to be called the funniest Indian female comedian that exists,” she said. “I feel like I can go head-to-head with the best white, male comedy writers that are out there. Why would I want to self-categorize myself into a smaller group than I’m able to compete in?

This is exactly the kind of comic we need–another woman who’ll help dispel, for once and for all, the stupid myth that women aren’t funny.
