The people who set up the Women’s March on Washington are back with a three-day conference in Detroit! The Inaugural Women’s Convention is “a weekend of workshops, strategy sessions, inspiring forums and intersectional movement building to continue the preparation going into the 2018 midterm elections.” From October 27th through the 29th, thousands of people are expected to flock to Detroit for training centralized around the 2018 elections. More information is soon to come from the official Women’s March site, but at this point, it is already clear that this event will be very different from the March in January.
The main difference is that you need to get tickets. Instead of marching in the streets like we did in D.C., the event will be held in Cobo Center and you’ll need a ticket to attend. It is $295 for General Registration, but there are discounted Youth tickets at $125 for anyone 25 years of age and younger. They are also scholarships available for not only the cost of registration, but also accommodations and travel. A Crowdrise has been created where people can donate to the scholarship fund. Applications for scholarships are being accepted until September 12th and only take a couple minutes.
The Women’s Convention is also longer than the March, with more events planned. With three days full of workshops and forums, they plan to “bring together unprecedented numbers of activists and movement leaders, rising political stars that reflect our nation’s changing demographics, and thousands of new grassroots leaders.” If you can make your way to Detroit this October, the Women’s Convention won’t disappoint; and if you can’t, then you can donate to help someone else go.
