Hurricane Staycation: Six Ways To Enjoy Yourself This Joaquin-Weekend

by Jenavieve Hatch

While Joaquin is hanging out in the Bahamas, we’re prepping on the off chance he decides to make his way up the U.S. coast, and we’ve got all the things you’ll want to do while you’re staying dry with a weekend inside.

Get Drunk!

Enjoy one or all of the following beverages to accompany the rainy days and nights:

The Hurricane

It may be a tropical drink unfit for a storm but the name is too fitting. See how to make it here

Dark and Stormy

Since it’s so dark and so stormy. You know you’ll need ginger beer and rum but for everything else, check here

Mulled Wine

Forget pumpkins. Nothing says “It’s finally fall!” like cinnamon in your wine and purple in your teeth. This is a fun recipe to play around with but start here to get the idea.

Heavy Seas Peg Leg Imperial Stout

For the beer drinkers – Beer Advocate gives it four stars and you’ll love this rich beer that looks heavy but goes down light.

Caramel Apple Jell-O Shots

An apple a day keeps the doctor way (and we can ignore the part where there are schnapps). Find the recipe here, and put your car keys somewhere very far away.

Get Laid!

What’s more fun than being stuck inside all weekend with a consenting adult? Light some candles. Burn some incense. Get it, girl.

Get Musical!

Dust off your karaoke machine for the ultimate hurricane sing-off with the following songs, because we know you secretly wish you were Grace Jones.

Grace Jones entire album, “Hurricane” is worth staying in for.

Bob Dylan – Hurricane

Florence + The Machine – Hurricane Drunk (aren’t you?)

Ann Peebles – I Can’t Stand the Rain/ Missy Elliot – The Rain [Supa Dupa Fly] if you’re feeling funky

Scorpions – Rock You Like a Hurricane (in case you haven’t managed to get laid yet)

Get on Netflix!

Natural disasters are a lot more fun to watch than to be in. Netflix has you covered.

Sharknado – this will likely be more fun if you’re still drunk

Deep Impact

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Nova: Hurricane Sandy Aftermath – because this one probably won’t be as bad as that one!

Grey’s Anatomy – Meredith Grey has survived every kind of disaster that there is, and so can you.

Get Crafty!

Being shut in all weekend is the perfect excuse to get down and dirty with your Mason jars and old popsicle sticks. Try these crafts to help pass the time:

Mini-pallet coasters

These cute little things are much better than the personalized picture coasters you accidentally won at last year’s white elephant gift exchange. Instructions here

Maple Leaf Mason Jar Candle Holders

Set the mood with something pretty this October using leaves you found on the ground. Grab your Mod Podge and see instructions here

Oatmeal Spice Soap

Seasonal smells without having to walk into Bath & Body Works! See how to make it here

Lace Candle Holder

Because if Mob Wives’ ‘Big Ang’ can get crafty,  you have no excuse not to. Set the mood with these sexy little things, instructions on her blog.

Get Hungry

All of the vigorous sexing and crafting should leave you hungry. If it doesn’t, you’re not doing it right.

End of the Rainbow cupcakes

For when the storm finally clears. Instructions for these impossible cute cupcakes can be found here

Easy Thai Shrimp Soup

You’ll need something warm and delicious for the cold stormy nights. Find these easy recipe here

Hurricane Cake

To go with your hurricane cocktail while Grace Jones’s Hurricane plays in the background and Meredith Grey survives hurricane-like conditions while giving birth. Get the recipe and ingredients here
