How You Can Help A Super Cool Indie Bookstore!

by Mary Rockcastle

If you’ve spent much time in New York City, you’ve likely been to (or been sent to by cool professors in your first semester at college, like me) St. Mark’s Bookshop.

Likely to be called “magical” or “radiant” by your average bibliophile, St. Mark’s bookshop is an independent bookstore that specializes in Cultural Theory, Graphic Design, Poetry & Small Press Publishing, Film Studies, and Foreign & Domestic Periodicals and Journals. With a loyal following of students, designers, artists, and academics, the bookstore has been going strong since it’s establishment in 1977 in the East Village.

The historic bookstore is looking to pick itself up by its bootstraps and move to a different location in the eclectic East Village, but they need a little help. That’s why the Friends of St. Mark’s are taking a step forward in the fundraising by launching an IndieGoGo campaign to pay for the move and to maintain as much inventory as possible.

The Friends wrote on the campaign homepage, “Now is the opportunity for a final push as St. Mark’s reinvents itself as a non-profit event space, while continuing to fill the East Village’s niche for a small brick-and-mortar bookstore featuring carefully selected new theoretical, political, art, design, poetry and independent literary texts in traditional print format.”

Donating to the cause will land you some awesome perks courtesy of the bookstore, like gift cards, discounts, and crazy rare annotated books.

So if you’ve got a little cash to spare, think about donating to our favorite local bookstore, especially while big corporate companies loom just around every corner. Shopping local and helping out small bookstores helps keep the best one-of-a-kind bookstores just that: one-of-a-kind.
