How Kick-Ass Would A Harriet Tubman Barbie Be?

by Intern Julie

Multi-media artist, Pierre Bennu, has released the second piece in a three-series installment of commercials for a hypothetical  “Black Moses Barbie” toy. The commercials are an extremely clever and funny tribute to the legacy of Harriet Tubman and offer incisive and witty commentary on sexism and racism – then & now. The videos not only celebrate Tubman’s legacy and offer alternative ways to remember and celebrate black and American history, but Black Moses Barbie’s tough-as-nails demeanor also challenges contemporary notions of what a girl can and can’t do. The commercials are part of a larger series of paintings and films where Bennu reimagines and deconstructs images of people of color in popular culture.
