Responding to street harassment can be tough. “Common wisdom” often dictates to simply ignore, and many people do – after all, you may feel threatened, exhausted, or simply unable to formulate an appropriate comeback. Personally, I do my best to counter with something – whether it’s a Jerri Blank-esque face, an obscene hand gesture, or a disgusted eye roll- but sometimes I long for a more reliable and solid go-to response. Hollaback, an international movement to end street harassment for women and LGBT individuals, has announced the release of a new iPhone application to help respond to, combat and record that harassment right when it happens. Anyone who has been harassed can tell you it can be simultaneously frustrating and isolating- and Hollaback’s mission is to help those who are affected by it to find the courage to address it. Download the application today- or, if you don’t have an iPhone, check out the website for tips, personal accounts, and more.
