Heartbreaking Video Shows the Negative Feedback Women Receive Every Day—With or Without Makeup

by Hanna Lustig

Last year, YouTube beauty guru Em Ford of My Pale Skin began posting pictures of herself without makeup to social media. A twenty-something ex-model turned filmmaker, Ford’s bare-faced selfies were a refreshing reprieve from the scores of lacquered, perfected Instagram selfies usually floating around the Internet. With an online following more than 200, 000 subscribers strong, Ford’s face attracted no small amount of public commentary. And in a viral short film uploaded earlier this month, Ford shed some light on that revealing experience.

The video opens with Em on camera, vulnerable and surrounded by a sampling of the hateful comments she received on the pictures. Slowly, she begins to apply makeup – and the comments displayed move from disgust to praise.

She begins to smile confidently, but then, the mood shifts again. “This is amazing,” one comment begins, “but so gross.” The positive feedback warps into makeup-shaming and slut-shaming, with comments like “This is false advertising.”

Oh, the hypocrisy.

Give it a watch, then spread the word about #youlookdisgusting.
