Gloria Steinem to be Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

by Melanie Mignucci

(And speaking of Gloria Steinem…

Here at BUST, Gloria Steinem is our golden girl, and apparently the White House thinks so too. The Associated Press reported last Thursday that Ms. Steinem was among the 16 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor. Four other women were also chosen to receive the award: Oprah Winfrey, Sally Ride, country singer Loretta Lynn and glass-ceiling-breaking judge Patricia Wald.

Honorees are recognized for their contributions to society, in all shapes and sizes. More than 500 people have been given the medal since its inception in 1963.

“This year’s honorees have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their gift for sharing that talent with the world,” said President Obama in a statement.

Dedicated BUSTies will remember that Steinem was awarded the BUST Golden Bra for “Queen of Feminism” at our 20th Anniversary Extravaganza a few weeks back. We wonder if she’ll think the PMF is “fan-fucking-tastic” too!

Check out the video below of Steinem’s amazeballs speech (and the making of the BUST Golden Bra!) and congratulations to our “Queen of Feminism!”
