Unless you live in the Twin Cities, prepare to be very jealous, indeed. This May, St. Paul will host the Girls Got Rhythm Fest, a two-night concert extravaganza featuring veritable music legend Ronnie Spector, among other acts. A pioneer in the girl rock scene since the 1960s, Spector is no stranger to the limelight. She is responsible for hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You,” which were basically written to be sung into the mirror with a hairbrush in hand. (Don’t be ashamed, we’ve all done it.) The 5.6.7.8’s, a Japanese surf rock trio most famous for their part in Kill Bill (video below) and California rockers the Muffs round out the headliners.
Beyond these well-known acts, the Girls Got Rhythm Fest is highlighting smaller bands from across the country. Pierced Arrows are repping Portland, White Mystery hails from Chicago, The Little Girls and Midnite Snaxxx will be bringing the sunshine all the way from California, and Nikki Corvette will be making her way to the festival from Detroit. International act Caroline and the Treats will also be playing, as well as Twin Cities up-and-comers The Pinsch, Hot Rash, and L’assassins.
Girls Got Rhythm Fest will be held at St. Paul’s Amsterdam Bar and Hall the weekend of May 11. Tickets can be purchased online at TicketFly and other information is available at the festival’s official site. You can also find the event on Facebook or Twitter.
If, like us, you’re stuck somewhere that isn’t St. Paul (who would’ve thought Brooklyn would be looking so second rate?) then this lineup, as well as the festival’s admirable goal of supporting female musicians, may just be worth the journey to Minnesota.
