Best known for her DJ work and role in bands like Le Tigre and MEN, JD Samson recently put out a delightful video in partnership with School of Doodle. The platform’s goal is “to change the way girls value themselves and teach them to be loud.” Samson does this through opening a dialog about her facial hair. Celebrating body positivity, Samson’s video seeks to remove the shame and stigma that comes with feeling the need to change certain parts of ourselves to conform to societal beauty standards.
After watching Samson’s cheerful video, I googled “hair removal.” Some of the first things that show up are a $450 at home hair removing laser, an advertisement for waxing, and an article about DIY hair removal. There is a multi-billion industry built around preying on the insecurities that come from some of the most natural parts of our body. When Samson says, “respect the mustache,” it’s a proclamation of self-love. It’s a form of self-determination that demands recognition and acceptance. Even if female mustaches don’t catch on as the mainstream, female empowerment can be the next big thing.
