Get “Lit” This Holiday Season with Hand Job Academy and Basside

by Devon Preston

Sick of listening to the same holiday songs, over and over again? Are you craving a holiday tune that you can deck the halls to and get down at the club to? Do you need an excuse to pop bottles and light up a blunt with your home girls after spending 24/7 with the fam? Then you should probably take a listen to “Lit (Like a Christmas Tree)” by Hand Job Academy and Basside.

Straight from the ladies who rapped about periods, Tumblr bitches, and Lena Dunham, Hand Job Academy of Brooklyn has collaborated with Miami duo Basside to create a holiday anthem for girls who are doing much more than smooching Santa Claus this year. And with a bouncing baseline and tight lyrics, this track is sure to become an instant classic—at least among women who don’t give two shits about making the naughty list.

The song highlights each member of the group, including personalized verses by Ash Wednesday and Clara Bizna$$ of Hand Job Academy, as well as (Que Linda) Linda Attias and (Caro Loka) Carolina Villalba of Basside. Not to mention, Que Linda shot the entire video herself and her sister Sarah Attias styled each of the girl’s looks. Each member of the epic girl-group mashup gives their own take on the holiday season based on personal experiences and in turn a brilliant collage of different ethnicities, religious identities, and feminist upbringings created throughout the song. From Wednesday spitting rhymes about receiving a chemistry set for Christmas to Latinx traditions—these ladies show that there is no set way to celebrate the holidays, just like there is no set way to be a woman.

So whether you are lighting up like a menorah, a Christmas tree, or something else entirely—this holiday tune will have you jamming into the new year.
