There are many reasons why the gay wedding I’m about to gush over for the next few paragraphs is worthy of attention. First, it blows New Girl out of the water in terms of adorkableness (I’m still a fan, Zooey!). Second, it follows on the heels of recent decisions by comic book writers to get on board with the gay. And third of all, June is Pride Month and that means every blog gets a little more colorful.
Ohio-based Scott Everhart, 39, never expected to be chosen for the wedding of a lifetime in a New York comic book store, the Huffington Post reports. Nevertheless, he did what most gays and lesbians with an Internet connection and a few spare minutes would do: enter Midtown Comics’ contest.
Designed to celebrate the wedding between Northstar and Kyle in the recent release of “Astonishing X-Men” No. 51., same-sex couples around the country competed to win the geekiest wedding of all time.
Luckily for Everhart and then-boyfriend/now-husband Jason Welker, 33, the “aww”-inducing couple was chosen by Midtown Comics for an all-expenses-paid wedding. The whole thing came as a surprise to Welker, who found out about the contest when Everhart proposed to him, according to the Huffington Post.
If I were a fly on the wall at that moment, I probably would have died from all the helpings of cute going around.
“I had absolutely no idea what he was trying to tell me at the time, but when it sunk in, I kind of just wanted to run out and get married right that minute,” Welker told Huffington Post reporters.
But they didn’t run off to tie the knot in Ohio, where same-sex marriage isn’t legal (you can thank Republicans for that). Marriage for gay and lesbian couples has been legal in the state of New York since July 2011. The pair officially tied the knot last week in the store’s financial district location, and judging from the photos, the nuptials were marvelous.
The New York Times reports that the reception was held at the Eventi Hotel in Chelsea. Their music of choice? Superhero tunes. I bet you didn’t see that one coming!
The couple’s winning contest entry included photos of the self-proclaimed “geeks in love” with their stacks of comic books. The two have been together for about a year and were the first to marry in the comic book shop.
“We’re proud to take this opportunity to promote equality and tolerance, which is the message of the X-Men themselves,” Gerry Gladston, one of the store’s owners, told the New York Times.

I’d venture to say that the masked crusaders would be quite pleased with all of this progress. I’m raising my cape to these lovable nerds!
