GAGA Show in Soho (ok, ok, not that Gaga…)

by Phoebe Magee

…But if I may be so bold, I daresay the Lady might like this.

Last night I saw the craziest dance thing.  Two girls, two matching outfits, two blonde wigs, one weird mash-up of Kid 66 and Prodigy, among other things, and ten or fifteen minutes of strong, theatrical, synchronized, legs-and-arms-all-over-the place movement.  Genna Baroni and Yarden Raz are the female choreography and dance duo behind “You Drool on Me,” a piece showing TONIGHT at the Rover Soho that borrows heavily from the Israeli dance technique known as “Gaga” (as far as I know there’s no relation to her Ladyship, but like I said before, I think she would be into it).  Anyone who went to middle school… or high school… or college with me knows I can’t dance to save Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas.  But to me, what these girls are doing looks like some kind of incredible Israeli vogue-ing mixed with something almost tribal.  As a pair, Baroni and Raz move in perfect unison, both bodies incredibly strong, and incredibly different from one another.  With movements that are aggressive, fierce, and flamboyant, “You Drool on Me” and Gaga show off the female form in a new way:  what shapes it can take, and what it can do.

I just found out that “You Drool on Me” shows again tonight at The Rover SoHo dance space at 41 Wooster Street at 8 o’clock. The piece is one of three showing, all of them by great up and coming lady choreographers (Megan Bascom’s “dream.fly.awaken.continue” and Lane Gifford’s “Collide” are the other two).  I know, I know, this is all happening in like an hour, so if you can’t get your butt to SoHo now maybe this new Gaga will sweep the nation later (if so, you heard it hear first).  You can also find Genna Baroni and Yarden Raz on YouTube for sneak preview, though I’m not sure if the video does the whole thing justice:
