“Friends with Kids” Introduces us to Some Next Level No-Strings-Attached Scenario

by Intern Caroline

Last week we broke the news that there may be a Bridesmaids sequel without Kristen Wiig. We’re still trying to make sense of this–it’s like some hellish nightmare where somebody’s eaten all the marshmallows out of your super-adult breakfast cereal. But do not fret! Friends with Kids, due out this spring, rounds up a lot of faces from the star-studded cast and promises to deliver laughs and/or raised eyebrows.

Remember last year when all these movies were coming out with the same plot? You know–the ones about (super sexy) friends thinking they can bang with no strings attached and everything will be fine? And of course they fall in love in the end because that’s how it always works out except in real life? And you were left sitting in the audience with your friends and the near empty water bottle of Joose you snuck in summoning all of your strength not to text your most recent Romantic Friend and ask them what they were getting into tonight? Well in Friends with Kids, Jennifer Westfedlt, writer, director, actress and luckiest-woman-alive (aka partner to Jon Hamm), decided to kick it up a notch and add a new twist to the old tale: no-strings-attached parenting.

That’s right: Jason and Julie, two totally platonic buds played by Westfedlt and Adam Scott, take a hard look at their closest friends’ sex lives. Alex and Leslie, played by Chris O’Dowd and Maya Rudolph (our Feburary/March cover girl!) have stopped taking it to the bone yard since having kids, whereas childless spouses Ben and Missy, played by Hamm and Wiig, still go at it like lil’ bunnies.  I think a fair amount of alcohol leads our protagonists to the realization that–hey!–they both want the joys of parenthood without the sexual pitfalls that seem to come with the territory. So they make an agreement to do it until they make a baby–they’ll share custody while holding on to their separate sex lives. Yeah right! We all saw how this one goes down on Friends. Enter Megan Fox and Edward Burns who are the impossibly sexy people there to complicate things… I wonder how this one will work out!

This is a cast who knows how to play off each other with a bright director/writer at the helm so I’m sure we’ll be rolling on the floor laughing. Just look at this trailer!
