A little while ago I wrote this blog post, which basically boils down to me word vomiting all my feelings about the stellar Kate Leth of Kate or Die. Kate writes for popular comics like Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors, along with keeping up with her own web comic about her life.
Now this comic book extraordinaire is moving into the world of podcasts as she launches Less Than Live with Kate or Die, a podcast about comics and the people who make them. Kate is specifically interested in women who make comics and those who are making comics about women. The podcast features Kate going through the comics she herself is reading, along with answering questions from twitter and interviewing people in the comic industry. The second episode is out now with an adorable interview with some of the all-girl crew behind Lumberjanes, (which I’ll get to later).
In honor of Kate’s killer new podcast, I wanted to share some of my favorite current comics that are feminist friendly and totally entertaining.
1) She-Hulk (Marvel Comics)
Besides the jaw-dropping covers (which I’m itching to frame) by Kevin Wada, She-Hulk is the superhero every girl needs. I’ve never been very into following superheroes but She-Hulk is absolutely changing that. A duel superhero/attorney with green skin and ripped muscles? Yeah, I’m in.
2) Lumberjanes (Boom Studios)
Written, drawn, inked, and lettered by an all girl team, this comic is making history for women in the comic world. Lumberjanes is heralded as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Gravity Falls, focusing on five girls fighting monsters at summer camp. Also, there may be girl on girl smooching in this all ages comic. History in the making, y’all.
3) Sex Criminals (Image Comics)
Time Magazine’s Comic of the Year has a strange but simple premise: Suzie can stop time when she orgasms. When Suzie meets Jon, who conveniently also can stop time when he does the deed, they fall in love, have sex, and rob banks. We take a surprisingly intimate look at a woman’s understanding of her budding sexuality and explore what it means to be in love, or maybe just in lust.
4) Bee and Puppycat (Boom Studios)
This is exactly the comic I would love if I had read comics as a kid. The comic is created by Natasha Allegri, who wrote for Adventure Time and created the gender-swapped characters Fionna and Cake, and was one of the most popular Kickstarter comics of all time. The story follows the adventures of Bee, a magical girl, and her mysterious Puppycat.
5) Ms. Marvel (Marvel Comics)
Have you always wanted a person-of-color ass-kicking lady superhero? Me too, dude. Thank god for Marvel’s new run of Ms. Marvel, starring a Muslim teenage girl in Jersey City fighting crime with her special powers.
