Fight for Marriage Equality and Wedding Cake Continues

by Jennifer Welsing

It’s been an uphill battle for gays and lesbians to get marriage equality laws passed. Even once they get the license, elements of a traditional wedding, like getting a cake, might not be easy either. Recently, Sweet Cakes Bakery, based in Oregon, is facing legal action for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. In the filing, the couple had no problem buying other cakes from Sweet Cakes but when it came to their wedding cake owner Aaron Klein said “no.” He says he has no problem with talking to or selling things to gay people but he just won’t support their marriage. Citing his belief that marriage is between a man and woman, he claims that it’s his right not to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. The debate now is whether his religious beliefs out weighs Oregons Equality Act.

This isn’t the first time a bakery has come under fire for refusing to make a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding. Once in 2011 and again in 2012 bakeries in Iowa and Colorado made headlines and used their religious beliefs as reasons for their refusal. The Colorado bakery went as far to say they received more business because they denied a same-sex couple a cake. Sadly, it looks like some states are in support of the businesses. New Hampshire introduced a bill that would allow businesses to refuse service under a “conscience clause”. In this case they would have the legal right to refuse service to gays and lesbians on the basis of religious beliefs. Of all the battles that have been fought in the fight for marriage equality, this one really takes the cake. (Come on. Gimme at least one cake pun.)
