Unfortunately, the world of sports is one that is riddled with sexism – especially the world of my favorite (and the world’s favorite) sport, soccer. The current president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, is infamous for his sexist stances in regards to the game. In 2004, he stated that the women’s uniforms should have “tighter shorts” and “low-cut shirts” to for a more “female aesthetic” to make the game more interesting. Because all female athletes need to do is flash their boobs and wear tighter clothing to be taken seriously.
Perhaps in its attempt to try and patch up it’s sexist history (and slew of corruption allegations), FIFA today invited a woman to join the Execeutive Committee for the first time in its 108-year history. The appointment of Lydia Nsekera, president of the Burundi Football Association, is still subject to vote, but the invitation itself is important enough. Nsekera is also actively involved in several other FIFA committees, including the Committee for Women’s Football, the Committee for the Women’s World Cup, and International Olympic Committee. The Executive Committee to which she has been invited deals largely with the planing process of the $5 billion (Men’s) World Cup tournament every four years.
FIFA still has a long way to go to in the process of eradicating sexism in the Beautiful Game, but this is certainly a step in the right direction. Here’s to hoping we continue that way!
