Feels like New Orleans in Brooklyn…HOT-HOT-HOT!!!

by Jules Abraham

BUST brought the Bounce to Brooklyn this weekend, and it sure felt good to ‘shake it shake it’! The community pulled together to sponsor Big Freedia and Rusty Lazer in a two-part banger this past Friday and Saturday. Night One was a late night jammer at Coco66 in Greenpoint. DJs Miggy Stardust and Roofeeo built up the party with some revisited dance floor classics, while the ladies warmed it up for Big Freedia. And when she hit the stage, she hit it hard.  Women flocked to the front in droves to show off the signature ‘booty roll’ they’d all been practicing for months. Big Freedia did not hesitate to reciprocate the love, inviting the audience on stage for a fever-pitch rendition of ‘Azz Everywhere’. Balloons bounced around the club and all in attendance seemed merry and drunk by the time DirtyFinger’s new group, Blooddrums, hit the stage to finish up the night. Round Two, dubbed ‘Hoodstock’, served up the promised mayhem as the not-quite-yet-legal kids in Brooklyn enjoyed a rare All Ages treat. The show opened to Miggy Stardust’s Oakland Bros, MC Beme and tha Pessimist, who laid down some ill inspirational and racially satirical rhymes. Next up were local favorites, Japanther and Ninjasonik, who closed by telling the kids to, ‘never be afraid to be who you are’. By the time Freedia went on this time, the place felt like the equator had been relocated to New York with the entire crowd drenched from crown to sole in sweat.  But not even exhaustion could stop the crowd from raging to Freedia, Rusty and their fly dance squad one last time.  Though I was on party duty for a good bit of each night and didn’t get to see all the awesomeness that happened, the magic in the air was undeniable (and never fear, I got in my fair share of crowd surfing at round 2!). Big Freedia really lives up to her reputation of creating one of the greatest dance party environments I’ve ever seen, where everyone I saw was completely uninhibited and motivated to interact positively with one another. Be sure to follow more BUST events, as well as the other rad groups sponsoring the event: Candy Rain, Free Danger, DirtyFinger, SUPERCHIEF.tv, Bikes in the Kitchen & Miggy Stardust.
