February 14th is Now One Billion Rising Day in San Francisco

by Lindsey Gentile

For the city of San Francisco, Valentine’s Day is not just a Hallmark Holiday.  This morning, San Francisco’s District of Attorney, George Gascon declared February 14th, 2013 “One Billion Rising Day,” a worldwide campaign to end violence against girls and women.

“Violence against women is a serious and dangerous crime. Countless women have lost their lives because society turned a blind eye to the violence they suffered in their homes. On February 14, San Francisco will rise with 197 countries all over the world to take a global stand to end violence against women and girls for good.”

One Billion Rising, founded by award-winning playwright Eve Ensler, suggests using Flash Mobs, Zumba, and provides an overall encouragement to interrupt your daily routine and demand an end to violence.
