Fall in Love with an Adoptable Pooch This Weekend at the BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular!

by Sandi Esposito

Some of us (okay, most of us) are obsessed with handmade gifts and DIY crafty things. Others can’t get enough fancy food or beauty products. I, myself, am obsessed with shelter animals…and luckily for me (and them) so is BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular sponsor SNARR (Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation). There will be something for everybody this weekend at the Craftacular and Food Fair, and hopefully someone for the adoptable special needs dogs in the Pooch Room.

SNARR Northeast rescues dogs with severe handicaps, primarily from kill shelters. Dogs with deformities, whether mental or physical, minor or major, are generally pitied and ultimately overlooked in crowded urban animal shelters. The idea of a deaf or blind dog can seem overwhelming to most adopters, and a paralyzed or mentally handicapped dog is often out of the question, until SNARR shows up.

Despite Tootsie’s deformed feet, she has found happiness (and her signature pose) with her new family that includes other dogs and a cat.

The Pooch Room will no doubt be a highlight of your Craftacular experience. Take it from a girl with one blind cat, a cat with severe brain damage, and a formerly abused (currently delighted) kill shelter pit bull…you will leave uplifted and open-hearted. If you have been considering adding a new pet to your home, this is the time to learn what it entails to be the owner of a dog with special needs. Step one: embrace a “different” dog’s ability to teach you how to live a less judgmental and happier life.

This is Sebastian. SNARR Northeast took Sebastian out of a gassing shelter in North Carolina. To say he was terrified of human contact is an understatement. He was feral, and seemed a hopeless case.

A new life sometimes requires a new name. Meet Pluto, formerly Sebastian, who after receiving consistent care from his devoted adoptive family, lives with children and often plays dress up.

SNARR says they “give hope to the hopeless,” and I’d have to agree. This is a bold statement, and they live up to it by considering all dogs on death row to be in need and therefore special. SNARR saves doomed dogs throughout the country, including New York City’s Animal Care and Control. BUST is grateful that these dogs made it to our Pooch Room. The Craftacular provides creative ways to make your home and life unique, and we think that includes a one-of-a-kind pet!

Check out the SNARR Pooch Room, as well as the amazing wares of over 250 handmade, vintage, and fancy-food vendors, at the BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular & Food Fair this weekend!

It’s all taking place on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street, at 6th Ave.) in N.Y.C. The Craftacular will run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM both days.
