Explore the Ever-Changing Roles of Motherhood

by Intern Yasmin

Like the majority of 20-somethings who have self-proclaimed ‘family issues,’ I often find it difficult to look past the last pointless argument with my mom or generalized frustration with my dad to appreciate the unique beauty that familial relationships can entail. With the exception of over-commercialized pseudo-holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, how often are we able to take the time to analyze and appreciate the meaning of parenthood within our society and our world?

Just a few minutes browsing through the awesome website MAMA, sponsored by the International Museum of Women, will have you tearing up in newfound appreciation for your own mama and all the mama-like figures in your life (there’s also a section called Papa, so dads are represented too!). The site’s gallery “Mama in Many Ways” focuses on the evolving and ever-shifting meaning of motherhood in societies around the globe. Between interviews with eleven mothers, an online art gallery, fiction about motherhood, and a space for submissions from everyday moms, there’s lots to love.
