The Whitney Museum of American Art will present the exhibit Yayoi Kusama, about the avante-garde, extremely original artist of the same name’s development over six decades. She worked in Japan and the United States. It will start on July 12 and run until September 30th.
This woman’s middle name is versatile. She paints, draws, sculpts, creates films, performs, and immerses you in the art, taking you to the place she has created. Her pieces are unique, to say the least. She is infamous for her use of polka dots and patterns that will blow your mind.
At the same time, the museum will be (and currently is) displaying another of her works, Fireflies on the Water. This magical piece of art takes the viewer into another world. It’s pretty amazing what can be done with lights, mirrors, and water. My own story of where I am, as well as a song to fit the mood, pop into my head when I this, but I’ll let you decide what it means to you.
Yayoi was born in Japan in 1929 and arrived in the United States nearly 30 years after. She took the NYC avant-garde scene by storm. Then, in ’73, she returned to Japan to make a splash there as well. Now she is a highly revered and respected artist in both parts of the world. Both exhibits should be quite the experience.
