Eternal Flame: The Authorized Biography of The Bangles

One of the most successful all-female rock bands, The Bangles, have a new biography out. The story of the band—from their beginning as the brainchild of sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson through their interpersonal relationships and ups and downs—is expertly told. Band members and musicians from the early ’80s L.A. music scene spill the tea. BUST spoke with the book’s author, Jennifer Otter Bickerdike, about it.

When were you first aware of The Bangles?

I saw them on Friday Night Videos. The Bangles struck me as powerful, in control, and glamorous, which really appealed to me.

What was it about the band that inspired you to tell their story?

They created a glimmer of creativity and artistry, where being female seemed a super power. I wanted to honor their story, from their point of view, and to celebrate their trailblazing efforts.

How did you secure their participation for the book?

I emailed their website and told them about why I wanted to do this project and what they mean to me. I then got to know them, earned their trust, and now call my idols friends.

The Bangles faced vast misogyny from the press, their record label, and their producer. Do you think much has changed for female musicians since then?

No. That was one of the most shocking parts of the project—the type of press they received and their treatment. What’s equally terrifying is how things may have seemingly improved, yet changes are only superficial. Once age, appearance, and real artistry comes into play, a woman’s value is vastly different than that of a man’s.

What are you hoping for as a result of your book?

That The Bangles are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they so richly deserve to be.
