Elisapie’s New Album Takes Classic Hits And Translates Them Into Inuktitut. Check Out Our BUST Review.

by Mollie Wells

This fourth solo record (Inuktitut) from Inuk singer/songwriter Elisapie transforms the familiar into something deeply personal. The concept itself is fascinating: Take 10 classic pop and rock songs from the ’60s through the ’90s, translate them into Inuktitut, and reimagine their worlds through a completely fresh musical lens. But the result is what truly shines: songs like Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven)” and “Uummati Attanarsimat (Heart of Glass)” find new poetry in Elisapie’s hands—transformed from crowd-pleasers so standard that we barely notice them anymore to hauntingly gorgeous and often mesmerizing explorations of love, life, and humanity. Give this one your undivided attention.
