Doing Good This Holiday Season…

by Intern Courtnay

Stumped on what to get yourself, your bff or bf for Chrismukkah or Kwanzaa? Well, UNICEF and Threadless have got your back, or at least want to get on your back. They’re banding together to bring some joy to not only those on your gift list, but millions who need it most.

Over 10 million people in the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti) are malnourished due to a severe drought–the worst in 50 years. The consequences are dire, and UNICEF and other non-governmental organizations are working together to bring food, sanitation, medication, and water to area that badly needs it. Now there’s a way for you to help out, all while checking people off your holiday shopping list.

Good Shirts is the clever invention of Threadless and designers Justin and Christine Gignac, who created simple, bold, and iconic designs for a collection of shirts. The t-shirts are priced based on what the consumer is buying to aid Africa. For example, the $18.57 t-shirt features a graphic of a mosquito–each time a shirt is purchased, UNICEF will deliver three insecticide treated mosquito nets to those who need them most. The t-shirts range from around $18 all the way up to a cool $300,000–which buys a cargo flight for UNICEF. Even better is that 100 percent of the proceeds go to charity.

While you’re roasting chestnuts on an open fire in your graphic tee, you’ll be helping the less-fortunate this December. For more information, and to purchase the t-shirts, log on to Threadless. If you or your loved ones aren’t the t-shirt type, you can still make donations to UNICEF here.
