Do Not Miss- Miss Representation’s TV Premiere on OWN!

by Casey Krosser

You’ve read the interview with Jennifer Siebel Newsom in our Mindy Kaling issue, you’ve heard about the documentary here on our blog, now’s your chance to see the important documentary, Miss Representation, when it premieres on the Oprah Winfrey OWN Network on October 20th!  The documentary delves into the damaging effects of pervasive media which depicts objectifying, negative images of women.  It’s a problem that’s right in front of our eyes, but we often let it slip by.  Our culture continues to value women’s bodies over their brains, and there’s no argument that this impacts young girls’ developing self-esteems.

There seriously needs to be more media outlets which depict women positively, like BUST!  If you don’t believe that the media is a problem for women, by the end of the documentary you mind may change.  The film has interviews with prominent, incredible women like Jane Fonda, Lisa Ling, Gloria Steinem, Katie Couric, Geena Davis, Rachel Maddow, and more.  These interviews interweave with testimonials from teenage girls detailing their experiences interacting with television, commercials, movies, ads, everything media, every day.

This is a very important topic and it’s even more important to speak out about.  On the Miss Representation website you can find information about how you can take action today.

Don’t miss it!  And be sure to discuss, cry, and scream at the film endlessly afterward.  Hopefully this film will motivate everyone to become positive women in media activists.  Be sure to DVR it, host a screening, do whatever you have to do to make sure everyone you know sees this film!

Look how amazing it looks:
