Cynthia Nixon Recruits the Resolute

by Phoebe Magee

The sun is setting and it’s officially New Year’s Eve.  Made any resolutions yet?   I’m a last-minute type of girl myself, and most of my annual promises get made a glass of champagne or two in.  So I was happy to learn that Cynthia Nixon–formerly of Sex in the City and currently acting as spokesperson for WE tv’s national WE Volunteer campaign–is out there looking for those of us who remain un-resolved.

Since April, WE tv has been asking women (and the men they know) to donate twenty-four hours of their time to volunteer work with televised “What a Difference a Day Makes” public service announcements.  The newest PSA’s, to be shown throughout the coming month, feature Nixon asking viewers to “Pledge 24 in 2010”.  According to WE tv President and GM Kim Martin, the message at the heart of this particular public affairs campaign is that “volunteering just one day a year makes a difference in the lives of the people and the special causes we help,” and “as a woman, a working mother, and a public advocate,” the very busy Nixon is the right messenger for it.

As far as the special causes go, Nixon’s is The Alliance for Quality Education, a New York State community-based non-profit which promotes education reform and is, according to a press release, a leader in “the fight for high-quality public education” for all children.  As both an activist and the mother of a New York City public school child, Nixon has been a vocal participant in this particular fight.

If you want to find your cause, check out the WE Volunteer database, which uses your zip code and selected interests to connect you to local service opportunities.  It’s getting pretty dark now, and this is the night for resolutions.
