This past weekend I was just taking a stroll around the city and since I’m still new (have been here about a month), my eyes are constantly moving about–people watching, looking at buildings, trying to spot Matt Damon and Emily Blunt on the set of their new movie, etc. To my delight, I came about a little diddy I think you should check out.
There’s a performance installation called COVERS that is currently on view at the Lab Gallery (47th St. and Lexington in NYC) that consists of three performers wearing crocheted garments in a room of crocheted (almost) everything.
Besides a fake dog and some balloons on the ceiling, everything you see in the room has been crocheted. Hell, there was a performer crocheting as I was standing around watching. While there, the performers entered, separated and transformed the crocheted goodies into evolving images.
The performers ask the following questions: How do we project our desires onto objects we see in store windows? How do our desires shift when the objects become live women, both moving and changing shape, and vulnerable to the audience’s gaze?
If you want to check it out, do so quickly because the installation is only on view until Sept. 25. From what I gather, the installation is on view 24/7.
