Craftacular Sponsor Spotlight: Lower Eastside Girls Club

by Intern Ginny

The Lower Eastside Girls Club has been providing interactive programs to young girls in Manhattan since 1996. This organization strives to equip young ladies with the tools they need to build a successful future and to build “ethical, entrepreneurial and environmental awareness and leadership.” Members between the ages of 8 and 23 participate in programs that teach them how to cook, craft, dance, and garden, and get to take field trips around the country.

The Girls Club operates several small businesses that it uses for  business and job training, including The Art+Community Gallery, La Tiendita Fair Trade and Girl Made Gift Shop, and the Sweet Things Bake Shop. It is also building New York City’s first (and only) Girls Club facility. True to their message, this new building will be green (LEED Gold certified), and will help the organization continue to provide services to its members when it opens in early 2013.
