Craftacular Sneak Peek: With Roots

by Amalia Graziani

So they say the best things in life are free. While I love me some sunsets, nature, and friendship, I’d argue that the other best things in life are unnecessary. The farther a delightful item or experience is from assisting in my general survival, the more I like it (think hammocks, cronuts, leather pants, blowouts). Like marshmallows and condiments, there’s something magical about the fusion of two concepts that generally don’t belong together, which is why I’m a fan of With Roots, a jewelry line that features tiny living plants within each piece.

Each self-sustaining piece (yes, your necklace or earrings self-hydrate and recycle cells) is custom made by Brooklyn-based designer Sharon Goldberg. With Roots began when Goldberg made custom terrariums for a friend. She says that “he liked them so much he told me he wished he could wear them! I did my research and made it happen, and With Roots was born”.

They’re essentially natural Tamigotchis in necklace form, and are made for everyday wear and care. And speaking of care, your jewelry will show physical signs of being healthy or sad (yellowish, withered) based on how much you go in the sun. A good reminder to get your vitamin D, ladies.  So whether you love your coffee table terrarium so much that you want to carry a piece of it with you everywhere (sue me) or you just love the thought of wearing a dynamic and evolving little ecosystem, these pieces are great. See what I mean? Unnecessary = fabulous.

Find Goldberg’s gorgeous pieces at the With Roots booth at BUST’s Craftactular at World Maker Faire NY on September 21st and 22nd at the New York Hall of Science in Queens. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance!
