Cool Ladies in New York This Week: Performance Artist Adrienne Truscott

by Genevieve Bleidner

Adrienne Truscott, whose performance art and choreography have earned her international acclaim, is debuting her improvisational solo piece “…Too Freedom…” a show that aims to confront and challenge the norms of human interaction and self-presentation.

Truscott touches on many different genres with her work and has been creating in NYC for over 15 years. She has recently produced several short and evening-length dance theater pieces, which can be found on her website. She is also one half of the outrageous burlesque and acrobatic act the Wau Wau Sisters, who tour frequently.

For this piece, the workers she hired to set up and interact with her on stage are people she doesn’t know, “who don’t dance much and communicate mostly in Spanish to do just that and a bit more – just to keep it interesting and give it a solid possibility of failing.” Her performance examines the accepted norm that in order to avoid embarrassment, one must behave differently in different settings.

It’s an interesting concept, to say the least. And with a dynamic like that at play, anything can happen. But Truscott promises, “there are two truly funny things in the show” and that she will “be dancing around like an idiot and might smell a little like chicken.”

The evening long performances are scheduled to run Saturday and Sunday, December 8th and 9th, and Wednesday-Saturday, December 12-15, beginning at 8pm at The Kitchen in Chelsea. Tickets can be purchased online.
