Come Together On Denim Day NYC

by Haley Maiden

With April 26th fast approaching, it is imperative that we take action to raise awareness and show our solidarity on Denim Day. This annual event began as a result of a case in which a rape conviction was overturned because the judge reasoned the victim’s tight jeans meant that she helped her assailant remove them and therefore was giving her consent. Of course, people were outraged all over the world and wearing denim soon became a symbol of protest against the disgustingly prevelent trend of victim blaming in rape cases. Today, this event is an opportunity to stand up against rape and sexual assault.

Our friends at BK Style Foundation are on a mission to do their part on Denim Day. These badass activists are on a mission to support charitable organizations by inspiring community through fashion, art and music. As Rick Davy, the Founder and Executive Director of the foundation puts it, ‘BK Style Foundation is committed to supporting causes that affect our community, and we recognized Denim Day NYC’s mission and think it’s very important that we support a cause that touches everyone. Sexual assault/Violence is an epidemic in communities globally and we want to do our part to raise awareness.” In fact, BKSF takes on social issues including human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, eco-friendly initiatives, and a whole lot more. On Denim Day however, BK Style Foundation has partnered up with the team at Beauty for Freedom.Their goal is to use fashion and beauty as tools for raising awarness, accountability, and financial contributions for charities and non-profits who fight human trafficking. These powerhouse organizations have been working together to create a Denim Day campaign as well as a series of events. You HAVE to check out their incredible Denim Day NYC video. The empowering messages of survivors and the chilling imagery in this video are truly powerful and says a lot with very few words. Show your support and be sure to share it with your friends and family.

The organizations also took on an amazing photo series project with the purpose of engaging New Yorkers in the fight to end sexual and domestic violence and to raise funds and awareness for Denim Day NYC’s survivor advocacy programming. Beauty and fashion for an important cause… it doesn’t get better than that.

Sexual assault and rape have become way too common and normalized in our society. Denim Day is the perfect time to come together and send the message that this is NOT Okay. Coming together with a common belief is the first step in putting an end to these issues. Thankfully, we have the perfect opportunity to show our solidarity at the BK Style ‘Denim Walk’ across the Brooklyn Bridge on April 26th at 9am at the Brooklyn Borough Hall. There is also a Denim Day Rally/Press Conference on April 26th at 11am at Foley Square. Bring your friends, coworkers, family, really anybody, and come together to fight rape and sexual assault. Enough is Enough.
