Come All Ye Crafty: The Women Behind the DJ Decks at BUST Craftacular London

by Debbie Stoller

London’s coolest craft fair, BUST Craftacular returns this weekend filled to the brim with independent craft makers and DIY workshops.

Bethnal Green’s York Hall will be decked with boughs of holly, bespoke screen prints and bags of present perfect treats as it welcomes back BUST’s carefully curated, bi-annual craft collective for another year. But no one likes a party with a poor soundtrack which is why we’ve made sure there’s more for you to shop and bop along to than just that snowy Pretenders track or The Waitresses on repeat (Bah, humbug!)

Meet the women behind the decks this Sunday and why they’re feeling merry and bright to be performing at this year’s event.

DJ Fish Fingers

One part of wonder pairing Business Fish Disco, DJ Fish Fingers will be bringing the duo’s party flair and club floor classics to create an under the sea, groove lair. Their set will be a selection of solid disco and absolute bangers and, as Fish Fingers herself breams, I mean, beams they are thrilled to “share a room with a whole host of people doing wonderful and interesting things. It’s really inspiring”. When the pair aren’t scaling the club scene, Business Fish Disco are big champs of the Safe Gigs for Women initiative and will be creating a similarly welcome vibe for all who want to shake a tail to their sounds.

Do the scuba to DJ Fish Fingers’ no duds disco from 1pm.

Dana Jade, Clit Rock

A lightening rod for women’s rights, Clit Rock was born out of sheer rage with founder Dana Jade running women led music events to raise funds and awareness for female genital mutilation, in her own words: “all the misogyny in the world in a single act”. Unsurprisingly then, expect diverse and danceable tracks from across the globe in Clit Rock’s set, from her homelands to hip hop. Indeed, Jade has fond memories of BUST from when she grew up in NY with her Dad: “It was a priceless find for any baby feminist and made me feel sane and comforted in a world that mostly made me feel completely out of place”.

Dance to the revolution during Dana Jade’s set from midday.

Mammory Tapes

Because we all know the best part of a night are the hang times at home with your perfectly produced playlists on tap. Well, luckily for you, Mammory Tapes is all about bringing those bedroom beats onto the dancefloor. Hosting their inaugural fundraiser back in October at indie haven, Vogue Fabrics, the DJ pairing will be dusting off some of their best vinyls from the vaults – from NYC’s Bush Tetras to Swiss proto punks, Kleenex – alongside total tearjerkers to sing your hearts out to (Bonnie Tyler, we hear you). Ears peeled for some local DIY faves too fresh from Cheri Amour’s slot as part of The Other Woman on London’s leading art station, Resonance FM. (Picured at top)

Don’t stay in, come out and catch Mammory Tapes live on stage from 2pm.

Rubyy Jones

Badass feminist show grrrl and Queen of Queerlesque, Rubyyy Jones joins the lineup on stage at this year’s BUST Craftacular. A fierce diva on the microphone, Rubyyy has wielded and whipped audiences into shape across the UK at everything from burlesque festivals to club stages. Expect glittery feminist pop with a dash of big fat fabulous Canadian queerness!

Get kooky and kinky during Rubyyy Jones’ set from 3pm.

Period Krampus

How better to beat your monthly rage than with music and that’s just what Santa’s devilish horned helper Period Krampus is all about. Think wall of sound – soul soars into piercing punk and clatters into Christmas cheese. Bloody good fun, all around.

Surf the crimson wave to Period Krampus from 4pm.

And…YOU!

For those of you who have made it this far, thinking “I’d love to give that a go”, they’ll also be a rather jazzy Jukebox hour where you can do just that. All you need to do is tweet or text your request and your track could be played out during the event. Ho-ho-how about that then? #CraftacularJukebox

BUST Christmas Craftacular London takes place on Sunday 27 November 2016, 11am – 5pm at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London. Entrance is £3 on the door. Goodie bags for the first 100 shoppers.
