Colorado’s “Personhood” Would Seriously Harm Reproductive Rights

by Natalia Hadjigeorgiou

Oh, Colorado. I loved you for so long! The state that’s home to the beautiful Southern Rocky Mountains and has legalized marijuana.

But, unfortunately we are going to have to take a break until you get yourself together.

This November, Coloradans will vote on whether to expand the definition of a person in the state’s criminal code to include unborn human beings.

Personhood USA is at the head of this anti-abortion cause. This is their third year of trying to get “personhood” past the state’s voters. In 2008, Colorado voters rejected Amendment 48 and in 2010, rejected Amendment 62. So why is Amendment 67 important?

Amendment 67, known as “Personhood,” has changed the wording. In 2008 and 2010 the definition of a “person” began at the “moment of fertilization” and then “from the moment of biological development.” Now they have expanded “person” to include “unborn human beings.” This definition would include all stages of pregnancy, beginning from the moment of fertilization.

Unlike the rejected Amendments 48 and 62, a recent poll has showed that the bill would pass if elections were today. And that is scary! It’s stripping the mother of rights and extending legal and constitutional rights to a fertilized egg.

Here are some of the most shocking facts about Amendment 67:

  1. It would criminalize all abortions in Colorado, including in cases of rape, incest, and when the health of the mother is in danger.
  2. A woman who is pregnant and has cancer would be denied access to life-saving medical treatment.
  3. Any woman who suffers a miscarriage or stillbirth would be open to investigation for murder.
  4. It would restrict access to emergency contraception and birth control, including the Pill and IUDs.
  5. It would ban in-vitro fertilization for women who want to have a family.

If this amendment passes, Colorado’s 2.6 million women will face the strictest restrictions on their rights. You don’t have to be in Colorado to donate to this IndieGoGo Campaign, “Defeat the Attempt to Ban Abortion in Colorado.” It closes on election day, Nov. 4!
