Class Actress? Class Act

by Lisa

Any band that cites Madonna’s first album as a major influence is gonna get a listen from me. And in the case of the forthcoming EP from Class Actress (it hits ears Feb. 9), another and another and another. After totally falling for the Brooklyn trio’s throwback synthiness and lead singer Elizabeth Harper, who has a voice like buttah, I had to check them out at the Highline Ballroom last night, where they opened for Au Revoir Simone. They took the stage amidst winter wonderland, high school-dance like decorations, which with their super 80s vibe made the scene feel like the climax of a John Hughes movie, aka awesome. Not to mention Harper cops a pretty mean Molly Ringwald dance while she’s rockin’ the mic. At the end of their short set, I had hearts in my eyes. Afterward (like, 45 minutes afterward…longest stage set up ever), the ladies of Au Revoir Simone pretty much killed it. Especially when they brought out Harper and the first opening act Alexa Wilding for an a cappella version of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” Coupled with the fake snow flurries bursting from the stage, it was kinda magical.
