Chic Senior Citizens

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

You might be surprised to know that one of the best street style blogs around doesn’t chronicle the style of models or fashion editors, but, in fact, the style of senior citizens! While some street stylers favor young, model-esque bloggers who basically look good in a potato sack, Advanced Style documents the colorfully chic over 60 crowd. Since 2008, this blog has offered “proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age.”

When it comes to style, many senior citizens have a “no fear” attitude that you’ve just got to admire. Once in a while I’ll approach an older fashionista for my street style blog, The Rebel Waltz, and while people of advanced style love to stand out, I’ve found that they tend to be more reluctant of putting themselves online (unlike most youngin’s). I think this somehow adds a bit of mystery to their style and makes this blog pretty unique. Some of my personal fashion icons include some older ladies such as Anna Piaggi, Lynn Yaeger, and, of course, Betsey Johnson. Regardless of age, these ladies have got it going on. They rock truly individual style and make no apologies for it.

Editorial website, NOWNESS, recently released this fabulous video of some of the lovely ladies of Advanced Style. In the video, fashion icon, Iris Apfel, 88, sums up the idea of style perfectly. She says, “I think it’s wonderful to dress up. It’s an exercise in creativity. It makes you feel better.” Another woman of Advanced Style gives the best reason possible for dressing up at her age: “I don’t want to go around like a dreary old lady.” I can only hope to be this awesome at their age.
