As a self-identified geek and longtime Music-Obsessed Human, I’ve tried more than my fair share of headphones. Nobody wants to spend all their dang beer money on a crazy-fancy pair, but I’m definitely willing to shell out a bit of cash for quality sound and good construction that’ll withstand some abuse. I’ve tried everything from the ultra-cheap earbuds at Best Buy to massive 1960s-era Pioneer headphones (thanks, eBay!), but I’ve had nitpicky issues with most of them. Either they were too flimsy, too heavy, or, as is often the case with the over-the-ear type, so huge that they look like a medical device. (And with my Strawberry Shortcake-like head size, I don’t need to add any girth in that department.) I was super amped to check out the new Marshall Monitor models, and I’m happy to report that these are phones I could imagine settling down with (and maybe even starting a small organic farm or vintage store together).
Big enough to feel solid, but not so big that they make your noggin look like a hot-air balloon, the Marshall Monitor headphones feel just right. Visually, they’re reminiscent of Marshall’s simple-yet-hip 70s stereo speakers, meaning they’ll feel especially appropriate if you listen to a lot of Fleetwood Mac. (On that note, real talk: does anybody else think Stevie Nicks sounds like a goat? Am I the only person on Earth who doesn’t get her?) On a technical level, these headphones have a very warm, full sound with deep bass, which is super important for really hearing all the old-school soul and R&B songs on your iPod. There are extra sockets on the outside of each earpiece, so friends can share your music just by plugging their headphones straight into your Marshalls. These also collapse for easier toting/storage, and have a mic and remote on the cord, so you’re able to answer calls, adjust your volume, and fast-forward songs without taking your musical device out of your bag.
They retail for $200, but these suckers are built to last, and I’m trying to do that thing where you spend money for quality, instead of buying a ton of crappy pieces of junk that quickly end up in a landfill. In conclusion, if you’ve got the dough to spend and need some solid over-the-ear headphones, these are an excellent option. If the Marshall Monitors are too pricey, feel free to ignore my review and “go your own way.” GET IT?
