Jim Batt, the animator behind the Amanda Palmer music video “Want it Back”, has released a new short animation, “I Have Your Heart”. The film is a collaboration with New York artist Molly Crabapple and musician Kim Boekbinder, otherwise known as The Impossible Girl.
The idea for “I Have Your Heart” was hatched back in 2010, when Crabapple and Boekbinder decided to combine their visual and musical art forms into one project. When Batt hopped on board, the process of creating the film began. All of the set pieces and characters in the film were hand drawn by Crabapple, printed, and cut out to form an entire world in miniature. These elements were captured with stop motion animation by Batt, and the film was overlaid with Boekbinder’s song, “The Organ Donor’s March”.
“I Have Your Heart” tells the story of Cora Hedgebottom, an ailing young woman whose parents keep her sequestered from the world. Cora’s life is saved when a dashing casanova perishes on her doorstep and an enterprising physician performs an organ transplant using his heart.
The film marches us through an intricate Victorian landscape, matching delicately-detailed artwork with macabre touches at every turn. The final result is a gorgeous, endearing romp with a kickass corset-clad, swashbuckling conclusion. This crowd-funded film is well worth a watch. (Or two. Or eighty.) Check it out!
