A queen of pop and princess of punk, Charli XCX is currently working on a new album, set to come out Dec. 16. Called Sucker, the album is a punky and rebellious departure from her previous album True Romance. While she’s been embarking on her U.S. tour, Charli has been trying out her new songs on the crowds, such as her single “London Queen.”
After reading her interview with Complex Magazine, it’s clear that Charli XCX is not your average pop star. Actually, she seems to truly live the life of a rockstar, partying hard and frequenting clubs. She is a bit of a wild child, but is an extremely hard working lady who does not take her success for granted for one second. Having written Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” and her own hits (like the summer smash “Boom Clap”), Charli is busy and her talent can’t be questioned.
Well, actually it can be. She has many critics, and there are some who are quick to put her down because of her age and often compare her to other women in the pop music game. As a woman of such success and talent, and someone with such spontaneous work ethic and a refusal to conform to the requests of management, she can be seen as a threat.
Charli is a fearless and talented woman who may very well change the game of pop music. As if her punk aesthetic, feminist sensibility, and super-catchy songs haven’t already done it.
But, it’s the age old tale of society rooting females against other females. Being compared to other young females in pop, like Lorde, is unfair and besides the point. “Just ’cause we all have vaginas doesn’t mean that we all play against each other,” she said in her interview with Complex. “We’re all doing our own thing.”
Women in pop should be supporting each other, and not comparing themselves or tearing one another down (something the media likes to provoke). In the spirit of sisterhood, Charli XCX is rumored to be working on a new track with Sky Ferreira as they both work on their new albums.
