Barnard College’s Athena Center for Leadership Studies is celebrating women in film, both behind and in front of the camera. Paying tribute to female directors, writers, and producers (as well as the female characters they help create), the second annual Athena Film Festival is “A Celebration of Women and Leadership.”
The festival, running from February 9-12 at Barnard’s campus, focuses on diversity in both the real world and the film world. The college, along with Women in Hollywood–a site focused on women’s issues and popular culture–wants to expand on the conversation at last year’s festival about the future of Hollywood and the role women will play in it. There’s no doubt that co-chairs Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno and Young Adult, and Mira Nair, the director of Amelia and Vanity Fair, will have tons to say about the topic.
Last year’s festival featured a documentary about Benazir Bhutto, the 2011 Oscar-nominated film Winter’s Bone, and Miss Representation, a documentary that explores the underrepresentation of women in the media (which we think is a must-see). This year’s lineup hasn’t been released yet, but keep checking here for the announcement.
