Calling All Knitters/Crocheters/Crafters!

by Alison Berry

Hey there knitters/crocheters/crafters! Do you have a loved one or someone you know deployed overseas in any branch of the military? Want to do something to do something to say “thank you” to the men and women of the U.S. Military? Well, you can!

Operation Gratitude  is collecting warm scarves and caps for the their 2010 Holiday Drive. So what better than to donate handmade?

Operation Gratitude is a non-profit, volunteer-based corporation that seeks to lift morale and put smiles on faces by sending care packages addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas.

This year they are trying to include a scarf or cap inside each one of the care packages, their goal this year being 60,000 scarves and caps!

The hats and scarves don’t have to be fancy, in fact it is requested that you keep hats and scarves very simple (no fringe please). Any pattern may be used, a basic stitch with a soft yarn and a subtle color is perfect. Operation Gratitude asks that the measurements of scarves adhere as closely as possible to 5-7″ across and no more than 50″ long.

Beginning in September the Van Nuys Armory will be accepting items for the 2010 Holiday Drive, so please hang onto your scarves and caps until then.

For more details about Operation Gratitude, where to send your hats and scarves, specific patterns, and other ways that you can help, email [email protected] or visit their website.

Cheers!
