Call To Action: Men Speaking Out About Rape

by Janelle

Men Can Stop Rape, an organization that challenges the roles of traditional masculinity and seeks alternatives for male strength has responded to the gang rape of the 11-year-old girl in Texas just last month.  In hopes of ending sexual violence and promoting gender equality, MCSR works with young men in order to positively encourage and reinforce healthy relationships with women (and girls). And in simpler terms: these are men seeking to change the way men decide to be men.

In a letter responding to the horrific gang rape in Cleveland, Texas, MCSR doesn’t question the community where this crime occurred, but instead our society as a whole. “What are we teaching men and boys about their attitudes and behavior towards girls?” and even further…”What are we teaching men and boys about themselves?” By looking at the bigger picture, we can no longer blame race, class, or ethnicity for these crimes. These guys are taking matters into their own hands, in realization of the importance of a positive model for not only young girls, but young boys as well.

So often we hear women speaking out and advocating for the victims of rape, but we never hear about what men are doing. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, MCSR advocates for men to get involved as well. “When men speak out about rape and other forms of violence against women, we make it clear to other men that we do not tolerate or condone the mistreatment of women. We also send the message that men who mistreat women will face seriously negative social consequences for doing so – not just legal consequences. Join us and the women who have been doing this work for years. Stand up and speak out for an end to sexual violence!” Read their full letter here
