We’re all for ladies who rock their natural aroma, but sometimes you want to avoid pit stink without using gnarly chemicals. So which natural deodorants actually work? We put 10 brands to the test—through stressful deadline days, crowded subway rides, and even a car accident—to find out which ones truly get the jobdone. Here are the winners from our crew of perspirers.
Coming up Roses
The non-aerosol spray of Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant (weleda.com, $14, 3.4 fl oz.) is the easiest to apply. And though its BO-cancelling aroma is a little strong at first, it mellows out into a lovely rose scent. The bottle recommends applying three times a day, but some of our testers got away with fewer sprays.
Cream of the Crop
This tiny jar of Soapwalla’s Citrus Deodorant Cream (soapwallakitchen.com, $5, .5 oz.) packs a solid, no-stink punch. The organic, vegan mixture is made from vegetable powders, clays, and essential oils—including lime, grapefruit, and vanilla—which give it a bright, citrus-y scent. It’s got a frosting-like consistency that you apply with your hands, so you’ll have to get your fingers a little dirty in order to keep your pits smelling clean.
Schmidt’s Happens
With its screw-up stick packaging, Schmidt’s Bergamot + Lime Natural Deodorant (schmidtsdeodorant.com, $8.99, 3.25 oz.) looks like your average drugstore brand, minus all those parabens and phthalates. The texture of this Portland, OR-made product can be a little rough on sensitive pits, but the delightful scent and stink-free security are worth it.
