Yesterday was pretty much amazing. Before even arriving in Austin for SXSW, I knew that I was going to be seeing Hole play at the Spin Magazine party being held at Stubb’s BBQ. The organizers of the event sent laminate passes via Fedex, which was fancy and exciting enough, but then when I read “complimentary beverages provided by …” my excitement level went through the top of my head. So even though excitement was for sure present, there was a certain amount of, oh, comedy involved in the idea of seeing Courtney Love play as Hole, with an entirely new band. Um, the joke ended up being on me because she was amazing. Courtney doesn’t entirely look like Courtney anymore, but her stage presence is every bit the 1995 era Courtney Love that we can’t help but … (I’m not even gonna be that corny right now.) She played a few hits like “Doll Parts” and “Violet,” but her 30 minute set mostly consisted of songs off of the upcoming Hole album, Nodbody’s Daughter, which is set to be released by Mercury Records on April 26th.
Directly following the Hole set, we made our way to the Mexican American Cultural Center for the iheartcomix/Jelly/Mad Decent Carniville where we tragically missed Sleigh Bell’s set by like five minutes, but were able to be front and center for Glass Candy who’s singer Ida No from Portland led everyone in a dance-off with her song and dance stylings.
