Brutal Beauty Whips It into Shape

by Krista Ciminera

Whether you were underwhelmed or overwhelmed by last year’s Whip It, a fictional Hollywood movie about women’s roller derby, Brutal Beauty will answer your call for more hardcore derby action.  Starring the Rose City Rollers, Portland, Oregon’s real-life answer to Whip It’s Hurl Scouts, the documentary follows these women as they practice, battle, and dedicate their lives to this fast-paced, contact sport.  Not only are these women tough as nails and show that they can play just as hard as anyone else, they also make it a point to give back to their community by donating proceeds from their bouts to several organizations, like those that fight against ovarian cancer and animal cruelty.

I’ve been meaning to check out Brooklyn’s own Gotham Girls for awhile, but this is the next best thing.  The movie is going on tour this month, so check out their dates to see if there’s a screening in your town!
